Memory - Merrill plays with evil mirrors and blood magic leads to unfortunate things.

Merrill’s an adorable, innocent elvish mage and Isabela and Varric like to look out for her. Isabela in particular tends to hang out with her being a cool stoner aunt, but. She’s worried, and so is Varric; Varric’s tried getting her to step back from an obsessive project, as well, but got frustrated. Hawke’s tried blocking Merrill’s efforts, which makes things tense, but also hasn’t deterred the elf. She’s got this odd broken mirror in her place at the elvish alienage, and she’s been trying to fix it using blood magic, which is especially scary. But Merrill feels it’s for the good of her people.

Finally, Merrill decides she has to go back to the “spirit” that helped her get started on the project years ago. Translated: she’s going to summon a demon sealed in a cave on Sundermount. But when they get there, she finds the spirit missing, which is odd since it had been sealed. Keeper Marethari, an elderly elf, reveals that she took the demon upon herself because the demon always intended to have Merrill fix the mirror and use it to take her over. But she hasn’t stopped the demon yet: she intends to have the party kill her to truly get rid of it. This is, naturally, distressing for Merrill, but the Keeper says she chose to pay the price of Merrill’s blood magic for her. FIGHT.

Once the Keeper’s been beaten down sufficiently, she falls and praises Merrill’s strength, announcing the demon is defeated and they can leave the awful cave together. It’s good news for the clan. Hawke calls her on it, and it becomes clear the demon has simply taken over the keeper’s body. Hawke scolds her as Merrill mourns. If Hawke doesn’t point out that the keeper sacrificed herself out of love for Merrill, Isabela will.

When they finally leave the cave, Merrill’s Dalish clan is waiting outside. They turn hostile on discovering the keeper has died because of Merrill, regardless of the details surrounding the conflict. It ends up being a big bloody tragedy, and the mirror still doesn’t even get fixed for all that’s happened. Hawke will have a private conversation with the elf once they’re back in Kirkwall, but for Isabela, pointing out that the keeper loved the girl is about the extent of her ability to feel about about engaging in the issue. Feelings suck, okay.
