Memory - The "cargo" has to go overboard.

Isabela owes a debt. That’s why the people she owes have stuffed her ship’s hold with chained elves. A man from Tevinter, Devon, is there to make sure the “cargo” gets to their destination. He’s a flirty dirtbag, but Isabela prefers his distractions to letting herself think about the elves. It’s awful and she hates the situation she’s landed herself in.

It gets worse when the Orlesian navy finds them. The crew knows they’ll be hung as slavers if they get caught. Isabela’s trying any trick she can think of to outpace the other ship, but they’re just dragging with an overloaded ship. No one wants to die, so they start dumping everything they can. Until the only thing that’s left is Devon’s cargo.

Devon and the men start taking the elves out of the hold one or two at a time to keep them from understanding what’s going on. To keep them from fighting and overwhelming the crew. Isabela is disturbed, but she fears her own death. So each slave is tossed overboard, still bound at the wrists and ankles.

“I . . . told myself they were better off beneath the sea than wearing collars.”

They get away, and Isabela withdraws.
